Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass

Violin, Cello, Bass and Viola Lessons

We offer lessons in Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass. These are the recommended ages to begin each instrument:

Violin: 5 years old
Viola: 3rd grade
Cello & Bass: 5th grade

Violin in particular is one of the best instruments for students ages 5-6 years old to start on, in part because violins come in small sizes for very young students and in part because of the Suzuki Method, a curriculum tailored toward violin students who do not yet read. Students age 5-12 years will be asked to schedule a sizing appointment with one of our qualified instructors to determine what size instrument they will need.

Stringed Instrument Lesson FAQ

Which instruments do you teach?
We offer lessons for violin, viola, cello, and double bass. If you’re unsure which one fits you, we can talk through size, sound, and physical comfort before you choose.
Do I need my own instrument to start?
Yes, but you don’t have to buy one right away. Many students rent at first. It’s a smart way to start while you learn what feels right.
Is this only for students in school orchestra?
No. Some students come in for school programs. Others just want to learn for themselves. Both belong here.
How long does it take to sound “good”?
Strings take patience. Progress shows early, but tone develops over time. The work builds slowly, then suddenly clicks. That’s part of the process, not a problem.

The Rockwall School of Music is awesome! I have 3 kids in it with each learning a different instrument. We have worked with numerous teachers including our permanent teacher and other make-up teachers. We have been very pleased with their knowledge of music theory and the instruments themselves. The owners, Russ and Karen, and all of the office team runs the school with professionalism and is well organized. They are great communicators and always seek for improvements. My kids are learning to much!
